From riverside runs and floating sound baths to restorative sleep and nourishing dining, The Westin London City is redefining what wellness looks like in the heart of a global capital. Located along the Thames near St. Paul's Cathedral, the hotel seamlessly blends luxury, movement, mindfulness, and relaxation. Daily Travel Source spoke with General Manager Raffaele Ruocco about the growing demand for urban wellness experiences, the hotel's innovative programming, and why guests no longer need to escape the city to find balance.

How do you define "wellness" in the context of a fast-paced city like London, and how is that philosophy embedded throughout the guest experience?

There is a growing appetite for urban wellness experiences on the whole. There’s a feeling that one shouldn’t have to escape to a remote resort to discover moments of calm and serenity, and rather, one should be able to find this where they are. Wellness in a city like London isn't about escaping the fast-paced energy around you, it's about feeling at ease within the city, and having a base that allows that to happen seamlessly. Our role is to ensure guests leave feeling genuinely restored and rested. That philosophy is embedded at every touchpoint, guided by Westin's six pillars of wellbeing: Sleep Well, Eat Well, Move Well, Feel Well, Work Well, and Play Well. It begins the moment a guest walks through the door, with rooms designed for truly restorative sleep, featuring our signature Heavenly Beds, blackout drapes, and White Tea bath amenities. It continues at Mosaic, our all-day restaurant, where our Eat Well menu is built around sustainably sourced, locally produced ingredients. It carries through to the Heavenly Spa, the WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio, and even the interior design itself which has a natural color palette, contemporary design elements and our prime location on the river - all which were deliberate decisions made to evoke serenity in the heart of the City.

What guest needs or travel trends inspired programs like the Running Concierge and Floating Sound Baths, and which have resonated most strongly so far?

Our programs were created from listening carefully to our guests and understanding what modern travelers look for in a city break when they are combining work, play and rest. People arrive in London with busy schedules and while conventional spa offerings are wonderful, we wanted to offer more bespoke programs and amenities catering to movement, mindfulness and creativity.

Our RunWESTIN program with our dedicated Run Concierge (multi-marathoner, Charlie Watson) resulted from a recognition that many guests want to maintain their fitness and training routines when travelling but seek guidance to do this properly in a city they’re not as familiar with. Our Run Concierge brings guests, Westin colleagues and locals together on curated Thames-side 5K routes, turning a morning run into a fun community experience that we’re proud to have a great following with. It has been particularly popular in the lead up to events like the London Marathon, where the hotel becomes a hub for runners from around the world. We hosted 90 runners for this year’s marathon and the demand and bookings continue to grow year-on-year.

The Floating Sound Bath (also known as our "Sound of Weightlessness" sessions) were a recent addition to our wellness program, and addressed a different need entirely: deep nervous system recovery. Taking place at our Heavenly Spa’s swimming pool, these calming sessions have exceeded our expectations in terms of demand, so we now run two sessions per month which are always sold out. Both programs share the same underlying insight that guests don't just want to be pampered with a spa massage, they want to feel better after their stay from their nutritional regime, through to their workouts.

How is The Westin London City adapting to the rise of travelers prioritising movement, recovery and routine, and what role does your location near St Paul's and the Thames play?

This shift is one of the most significant changes we've seen in how guests approach a hotel stay and it aligns completely with the Westin brand’s DNA. We've invested heavily in making it as easy as possible to maintain a healthy routine here. The WestinWORKOUT Fitness Studio is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, equipped with Technogym, Peloton bikes, TRX and a Hypervolt recovery station. For guests who need flexibility around early flights or late meetings, that accessibility matters more than ever.

Our location is a genuine asset in this sense. The Thames Path right outside our door is one of the great urban running and walking routes in the world. It is historic, scenic and mostly traffic-free. Guests can step outside and run east towards Tower Bridge or west towards the Tate Modern. St Paul's Cathedral is a five-minute walk. Our Run Concierge maps curated routes (including accessible and stroller-friendly runs) that make the most of this, so guests aren't just exercising, they’re experiencing the best of London’s highlights. The river is also a source of calm. There's something restorative about views of the Thames and the hotel’s design maximizes this unique position. Our new luxurious 3-bedroom Residences available for longer-term stays, each have unobstructed river views. This is a rare offering among top hotels in London.

How do you balance indulgence with health-conscious dining, especially for international guests seeking both comfort and wellness?

We think about this deeply, and our answer is that the two are not opposites. Wellness in dining is about intention and high quality. Guests shouldn’t have to feel they need to choose between eating well and indulging.

At Mosaic, our all-day dining restaurant, the menu is built around sustainably sourced, internationally inspired cuisine that is both locally produced and nourishing. We incorporate the Westin Eat Well menu - dishes specifically curated to fuel and energise without compromising on flavor. Alongside this, Westin Fresh by The Juicery offers cold-pressed juices and smoothies for guests who want something lighter. And at Hithe + Seek, our wine bar with panoramic Thames views, we offer an indulgent Afternoon Tea service and an array of wines and cocktails in the evening. There’s something for all tastes.

For international guests, we're also mindful of the cultural aspect of food as comfort. Mosaic's global menu means a guest travelling from Italy, Japan or the US can find something familiar alongside something adventurous. Ultimately, maintaining a high quality of our ingredients, and being thoughtful about our menu offerings, is our priority.

How do you see the concept of "wellness hospitality" evolving over the next few years, and what role will The Westin London City play?

Wellness hospitality is moving away from being a separate segment of the market and becoming an expectation across luxury travel. Guests arrive knowing what they need, whether that's a specific recovery protocol, a particular dietary approach, or access to sleep technology. The hotels that thrive will be those that can personalise the wellness experience at a meaningful level, and who know their guests.

I also see how the wellness term is broadening; for some it could mean prioritising fitness, and for others it could mean doing yoga or having a moment at the spa, while for others it could simply be getting off their device to make the most of exploring the destination on foot. London is brimming with parks, culture, art and history, and ensuring wellness programming uses the city and its rich community as a resource will become a defining feature of great urban hotels. An example of this, is our partnership with local ceramic artist, Caroline Winn, who will be offering ceramic workshop classes starting from June. These kinds of ‘interactive’ wellness experiences which encourage guests to get creative, are what guests are looking for more than ever. At The Westin London City, we feel a particular responsibility as the brand's first UK property to demonstrate that wellness hospitality is integrated and thoughtful.
