Adventure travel is slowing down and getting more intentional. According to Backroads’ newly released 2026 Adventure Travel Trend Outlook, travelers are increasingly choosing wellness-driven experiences that prioritize connection over convenience.

Early booking patterns show strong growth in women and solo travel, multigenerational family trips, and adventures designed for travelers in their 30s and 40s who want challenge balanced with comfort.

Rugged “frontier islands” are emerging as the next must-visit destinations, while culinary-led itineraries and authentic stays in mountain lodges and huts are gaining momentum. Travelers are also booking back-to-back journeys and embracing off-season travel to maximize long-haul flights and avoid peak crowds.

As Backroads Founder and CEO Tom Hale notes, active travel is becoming part of the rhythm of everyday life, offering deeper cultural immersion, meaningful movement, and a renewed sense of connection.
