Discover Maryland's Timeless Charm at Brampton 1860 and Chestertown
Historic charm, peaceful countryside and the welcoming waterfront town of Chestertown come together to make Brampton 1860 a memorable Eastern Shore escape. Owner, Hilari Rinehart shares how the historic inn blends timeless character with modern comforts while highlighting the best ways to experience Maryland's scenic Eastern Shore.
Chestertown is one of Maryland’s most charming small towns. What makes the destination so special, and what can first‑time visitors expect when they arrive?
Chestertown has an easy, old‑world charm that feels instantly grounding. It’s a river town with deep colonial roots, brick sidewalks, historic storefronts, and a creative community that shows up in its galleries, boutique shops, and weekly farmers market. What makes it truly special is its authenticity—nothing feels staged, and everything feels welcoming.
First‑time visitors can expect a slower pace, walkable streets, friendly faces, and a waterfront that invites lingering. Whether they’re exploring High Street, discovering local shops and cafés, or getting out on the Chester River, people often tell us they feel at home here within minutes. It’s a place where you can simply be.
Brampton 1860 has a rich history and beautiful countryside setting. How do you blend the property’s historic character with the modern comforts today’s travelers are looking for?
The soul of Brampton is its history—wide‑plank floors, fireplaces, architectural details, and the sense that generations have found rest here. We preserve that intentionally. But we also know today’s travelers want ease, privacy, and thoughtful amenities.
Our approach is to layer modern comfort into the historic framework: luxurious bedding, updated bathrooms, high‑speed Wi‑Fi, climate control, and curated in‑room touches that make a stay feel effortless. The cottages offer soaking tubs, kitchens, and private outdoor spaces, while the manor house suites balance period charm with contemporary finishes.
The goal is harmony. Guests feel the character of the place while enjoying the kind of comfort that lets them relax the moment they arrive.
For travelers planning a relaxing getaway, what are some of your favorite ways to experience the Eastern Shore, both on the property and throughout the surrounding area?
Relaxation takes many forms, and the Eastern Shore makes room for all of them.
On the property, guests love slow mornings with breakfast delivered to their door, wandering our 35 acres of gardens and meadows, reading on the porch, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the quiet that’s become rare in everyday life. Evening walks and stargazing are small pleasures that feel big here.
Beyond Brampton, the Eastern Shore opens up beautifully. Cruising on the Chester River, sailing out of Rock Hall, and exploring Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge are peaceful ways to connect with the landscape. Chestertown’s galleries, shops, and cafés offer an easy afternoon in town, while nearby farms and markets highlight the region’s agricultural roots. Scenic drives through the countryside reveal water views, farmland, and small towns that reward wandering.
Whether guests stay close or venture out, the Eastern Shore invites them to slow down, savor the moment, and rediscover what rest feels like.
