Authentic Baja, Elevated: Explore Loreto

This week, Daily Travel Source is spotlighting Loreto, Baja California Sur — a hidden gem along the Sea of Cortez that’s redefining luxury living in Mexico. We caught up with Michael Buchalter, Vice President of Sales at Danzante Bay, to learn how this master-planned community blends world-class amenities, breathtaking natural surroundings, and authentic cultural experiences to create one of the region’s most compelling second-home destinations.

What makes Loreto stand out as a luxury second-home destination compared to more established spots like Los Cabos or Cabo San Lucas?

Loreto is really Mexico’s best-kept secret and regarded as one of the safest destinations in Baja. It’s a Pueblo Mágico with a history dating back to 1697, it blends culture, colonial charm and unspoiled natural beauty. Compared to Cabo, it’s far more low-key and authentic, which is exactly what many buyers and travelers seeking today: a sense of discovery rather than a crowded scene. As a safe, walkable town with a warm, close-knit community, Loreto offers second homeowners privacy, peace of mind and the chance to immerse themselves in a true Mexican lifestyle while still enjoying world-class amenities. It’s luxury without the noise.

How does living in a master-planned community like Danzante Bay enhance the lifestyle experience for residents and visitors?

Danzante Bay was designed to balance luxury and lifestyle with nature at the forefront. Within the community, you have access to the award-winning Villa del Palmar Resort & Spa, five pools, four restaurants, and the Sábila Spa, which at 39,000 square feet is one of the most expansive in Mexico. Golf lovers can tee off at TPC Danzante Bay — the only TPC course in the country, designed by Rees Jones — right in their backyard. Homeowners will also be able to enjoy a brand-new owners’ beach club and clubhouse, complete with dining, pool and jacuzzi, tennis and pickleball and more; completion is expected in the next couple years.

And then there’s the peace of mind: the infrastructure, services, and architecture all let residents know they’re part of a thoughtfully planned, secure, and connected community. It’s turnkey luxury living with the freedom to explore as much as you like. For our homeowners, they can choose single-family home from among four uniquely designed home plans by Kevin B. Howard Architects. Ranging from three- to six-bedrooms across our El Cardón and Canyon neighborhoods, homes start at just under $3 million and lots for custom homes are available from the $600,000s. It’s an incredible value for the size of luxury you get, representing a better choice than what you’ll find in the more crowded markets like Cabo.

Can you share insights on how the natural surroundings, like the Loreto Bay National Marine Park, influence the design and amenities of Danzante Bay?

The Marine Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and really sets the tone for everything at Danzante Bay. Homes and amenities are built to complement the landscape, using architecture that blends into the desert mountains and frames those Sea of Cortez views. Activities take advantage of the surroundings: kayaking through turquoise waters, LED paddleboarding at night, whale watching, or hiking in the desert hills. Even the golf course was designed to highlight the dramatic terrain; some of the most photographed holes in Mexico are here because of that backdrop. The environment isn’t just scenery, it’s woven into daily life.

What unique experiences or activities can visitors expect that combine luxury living with the rich cultural and ecological heritage of Loreto?

In Loreto, you can experience an incredible spa treatment and a traditional fishing trip in the same day. Visitors can explore the 308-year-old mission in town, head out with local guides to experience artisanal fishing or whale watching, and then return for fine dining at the resort or a round of golf. For adventure, there is everything from scuba diving and ATV tours to island hopping across the Sea of Cortez. We find that our homeowners and guests most love connecting to the local culture, history and nature in a way that feels authentic but still elevated.

With new developments like the Mailena wellness resort coming in 2026, what future trends or opportunities do you see shaping Loreto’s growth as a luxury destination?

The future of luxury travel is wellness-driven and experience-led, and Loreto is perfectly positioned for that. Mailena, Loreto’s first adults-only, luxury wellness resort, will bring a cenote-inspired wellness center, dramatic oceanfront dining, and a beach club that expands what Loreto has to offer. Paired with The Mantarraya Residences, it’s introducing a whole new level of lifestyle to the destination. And what’s exciting is that growth here is thoughtful — it’s about sustainable development and preserving Loreto’s natural charm, rather than overbuilding. Plus, the convenience of having an international airport served by airlines like American, Alaska, WestJet and others provides owners with quick and easy access to U.S. ports of entry like San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Francisco, with flight to and from Loreto daily. We also have easy flights from Calgary in Alberta, Canada.  I think that’s what makes this remote town so appealing: it’s an emerging market, but one that’s committed to protecting the very qualities that make it special market, but one that’s committed to protecting the very qualities that make it special.
