This week, we highlight Weekapaug Inn, a storied Rhode Island coastal retreat where heritage meets refined luxury. Set between Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic, the Inn offers a rare dual-coastal experience shaped by nature, seasonal farm-to-table dining, and curated activities. We spoke with Stephanie Leavitt, Area Director of Sales & Marketing, about how Weekapaug Inn honors its 1899 legacy while delivering the modern comforts and sense of belonging today’s travelers seek.
Weekapaug Inn has a rich history dating back to 1899. How does the Inn balance honoring its storied past while delivering the modern comforts and refined luxury today’s travelers expect?
The Inn’s history is essential to who we are - it sets the foundation for our identity and sense of place at Weekapaug Inn. At the same time, we recognize that the expectations of today’s travelers continue to evolve. Our approach is to honor the character, traditions, and stories that have shaped the Inn, while thoughtfully integrating modern comforts, technology, and refined luxury that enhance the guest experience. By staying attuned to what our guests value most and continually evolving to meet those needs, we’re able to preserve the spirit of the past while remaining at the forefront of contemporary luxury hospitality.
Set between Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean, the setting is uniquely dual-coastal. How does this location shape the guest experience, from daily activities to the overall rhythm of a stay?
Most of our daily activities take place on Quonnie Pond and across the surrounding guest lawns, allowing guests to engage with the landscape in a meaningful, immersive way - both on the water and on land. From morning paddles and waterfront activities to relaxed lawn games and evening gatherings, the setting encourages guests to slow down, connect with nature, and move through the day at an unhurried pace.
Farm-to-table dining is central to the Inn’s identity. How does your culinary team work with local farmers, fishermen, and producers to reflect the flavors and traditions of coastal New England throughout the seasons?
Our culinary team is always seeking out the freshest ingredients and takes pride in maintaining close relationships with local farmers, fishermen, and producers throughout the region. By working directly with those who know the land and waters best, we’re able to source exceptional seasonal produce, seafood, and artisanal products at their peak. These partnerships not only ensure quality and freshness but also allow our menus to evolve naturally with the seasons—reflecting the flavors, traditions, and sense of place that define coastal New England.
Each guest room is intentionally distinct, echoing the tradition of repeat guests returning to their favorite rooms year after year. Why was preserving this sense of individuality so important during the renovation, and how does it enhance the emotional connection guests feel to the Inn?
The individually designed rooms create a feeling of being welcomed into a home, not simply staying in a generic guest room. That sense of comfort and familiarity supports the way we approach service—thoughtful, intuitive, and tailored to each guest. When guests feel at ease in their surroundings, it deepens their emotional connection to the Inn, encouraging them to settle in, make memories, and truly feel a sense of belonging during their stay.
From resident-naturalist outings and boating excursions to wine tastings and fireside s’mores, the Inn offers an ever-evolving slate of complimentary experiences. How do these thoughtful touches help transform a stay from simply relaxing into something truly memorable?
These thoughtful touches transform a stay by creating a curated experience that feels intentional, personal, and deeply connected to the guest. Rather than simply offering a place to relax, each detail is designed to anticipate needs, evoke a sense of place, and spark moments of delight throughout the stay.
