With year-round recreation, family-friendly attractions and plenty of ways to experience the outdoors, Massanutten Resort offers a different kind of getaway in every season. For this week’s Destination of the Week, we caught up with Michael Hammes, Vice President and General Manager, to learn what keeps travelers coming back to this Shenandoah Valley resort.
Nestled in Virginia's beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Massanutten Resort is one of the East Coast's top four-season destinations. What makes it such a favorite for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Massanutten gives guests a real mountain escape without limiting them to one season or one type of experience. The WaterPark is a favorite throughout the year, with indoor attractions in every season and outdoor amenities during the warmer months. In winter, the mountain comes alive with skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, while spring through fall brings mountain biking, golf, scenic chairlift rides, and outdoor events.
That full four-season appeal is a major part of what sets us apart, but so is the setting. We are surrounded by the magnificent Shenandoah Valley, with lodging, dining, recreation, and entertainment all right here within the resort. It’s easy to settle in, explore, and feel removed from your everyday routine.
For many of our guests, Massanutten becomes part of their family tradition. We’re fortunate to welcome many of them back generation after generation.
Massanutten offers something for every generation. What are some of the must-do activities that make it such a great family getaway?
You can bring three generations to Massanutten and build a trip that everyone loves. The WaterPark is usually at the top of the list, with play areas for younger children and larger slides and attractions that teenagers and adults enjoy too.
At the Family Adventure Park, guests can try ziplining, rock climbing, and gem mining. Mountain Mayhem, our new mountain coaster, has introduced an entirely new thrill to the resort. Families can also go horseback riding, take an arts and crafts class, or slow the pace down with a scenic chairlift ride.
What makes the experience work so well is that a family doesn’t have to agree on one activity for the entire day. Everyone can pursue something they enjoy and then come back together for dinner, live music, or an evening at Base Camp. We’ve been intentional about creating that balance.
For sports lovers and adventure seekers, what are some of the signature experiences that visitors shouldn't miss?
Mountain biking is a large part of the experience here. Our Western Slope trails are exceptional. And with lift service, riders can bring their bikes up the mountain easily and spend more time on the terrain. A lot of guests arrive knowing we have a bike park but they are still surprised by the quality and variety of the trails once they experience them firsthand.
In the winter, skiing and snowboarding are of course among our signature offerings. We have slopes that welcome first-time skiers while still giving more experienced guests plenty to challenge them. Snow tubing is another standout because it requires no experience, and the entire family or group can enjoy it together. Our Northern Lights Tubing experience adds some magic to the runs with music and lighting that feels out of this world.
Something that’s most memorable for me: guests often arrive with one activity in mind and leave having discovered something they never expected to try. We see that frequently. And through every season, the mountain itself is the backdrop to the entire experience. No matter how long you have been here, that never gets old.
Beyond the mountain adventures, how do attractions like the indoor waterpark, dining and live entertainment create the complete resort experience?
There is a lot beyond the mountain that complements the adventurous side of Massanutten. The WaterPark is a big part of that experience, with indoor and outdoor areas, slides, a lazy river, and attractions for all ages. The indoor WaterPark stays at a balmy 84 degrees, so you can spend the day skiing or snowboarding and then come inside to warm up and have a splash. ShenandoaH2O, our new WaterPark hotel opening early 2027, will add another dimension by giving hotel guests direct access to the WaterPark.
Dining and entertainment also help complete the full resort experience. Guests can enjoy après-ski dining at Base Camp, gather around the fire at Campfire Grill, or attend live music, festivals, and seasonal events such as Summer Jam or our Fall Festival.
That is what makes Massanutten more than just a mountain resort. You can really build an entire vacation here, with something different to enjoy from morning through evening.
Whether it's a family vacation or a couples' escape, what accommodation options are available, and do you have a favorite place to unwind after a day of adventure?
Yes, we have a range of accommodations. On the Mountain side, guests can choose from hotel rooms and condos near the ski area and Base Camp, including one bedroom options and larger accommodations with full kitchens and plenty of space. On the Valley side, our condo accommodations are close to the WaterPark, golf courses, and other resort amenities. However, no matter which side of the resort you stay on, you’re never far from the activities you came to enjoy. For me, one of the best ways to unwind is to sit on the deck at Base Camp and just enjoy the mountain. It’s a great place to watch the resort in full swing and enjoy the energy that is Massanutten. Guests looking to relax even more can book a treatment at The Spa at Massanutten or spend the evening beside the fire pit at Campfire Grill.
