Thanks to a new partnership between Hipcamp and the Sierra Club, travelers can now book some of Tahoe’s most iconic alpine lodges and backcountry huts, many built nearly a century ago, just in time for winter.
The Lodges & Huts
Clair Tappaan Lodge: A 1930s, drive-in alpine lodge near Donner Summit with communal meals and easy access to snowshoe and ski trails.
Hutchinson Lodge: The original Sierra ski lodge (1924), overlooking Donner Lake.
Bradley Hut: A high-Sierra backcountry hut with a 4.7-mile ski or hike approach, popular for multi-day tours.
Benson Hut: A 1939 stone refuge along the Pacific Crest Trail, reached by a 5.5-mile winter approach.
Ludlow Hut: A secluded Sierra crest hut requiring a 5.2-mile winter ski or snowshoe approach.
Peter Grubb Hut: A well-loved backcountry hut near Castle Peak, just a 3-mile approach from the trailhead.
Centered around Donner Summit, these stays place guests near Sugar Bowl, Boreal, Royal Gorge, and Donner Ski Ranch, while offering a quieter, more immersive way to experience Tahoe.
